NGCA, or Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, has been a leading arts centre in the Northeast of England since its original formation in 1969 as 'Bookshop Gallery and later the Ceolfrith Arts Centre. Throughout these changes, the gallery's commitment to innovative, experimental art has been constant. On the occasion of the institution's 20th anniversary, Watson Memić were commissioned to develop a website specifically for the NGCA's year-long programme of special exhibitions and commissions, with a focus on its local culture and introduction of a new city collection.
The NGCA given UK premieres to various artists, from Sean Scully, Claes Oldenberg and Coosje van Bruggen to Sam Taylor-Wood and Spartacus Chetwynd. The collection has acquired over 500 artworks by more than 50 artists or artist collectives with a focus on, but not limited to, lens-based media and the North East of England. Today the collection continues to grow, and is often loaned out across the United Kingdom.
